ACLU cites a “sick culture of deputy-on-inmate violence” in LA County jails
On Wednesday, citing “a sick culture of deputy-on-inmate hyper-violence [that] has been flourishing for decades in the darkness of the L.A. County Jails,” the ACLU sued the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department seeking better training for deputies, and better oversight, investigation, and discipline in cases involving prisoner mistreatment. With 15,000 inmates—a majority of them awaiting trial, yet to be convicted of a crime—LA county hosts the nation’s largest jail system. In recent years, its guards have become known for a level of brutality that exceeds that of most maximum-security prisons—and sometimes crosses the line into torture.

MARE CHIUSO is the new documentary by Andrea Segre and Stefano Liberti produced by ZaLab with the support of Open Society Foundations.

As a result of an agreement signed by Berlusconi and Gaddafi in 2009, all migrants intercepted at sea by the Italian navy were forcibly returned to Libya, where they have been exposed to any kind of abuses by local police. Many of them, about 2000 people, were asylum seekers.

How has this “push-back policy” been implemented? what actually happened on the boats and after deportation to Libya? The case is being examinated by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. A story of great grief and dignity.

The film will be out March 2012.

The Beatles ruled. The mini was in. I was seventeen, and pregnant. What happened next is what could happen again.

New Film Sheds Light on Plight of Gays, 'Honor Killing' in Turkey: VIDEO

In colloquial Turkish, the word zenne means male belly dancer. It is also the title of a new film that explores sexual identity while also highlighting a deadly case of homophobia in modern-day Turkey.

“The starting point was a dear friend of ours who was murdered in 2008 for being gay by his own father,” said Mehmet Binay, producer and co-director of “Zenne,” which opens in theaters across Turkey on Friday.

Binay was referring to the 2008 killing of Ahmet Yildiz, a 26-year old physics student who was gunned down in Istanbul.

Court records identify Yildiz’s father, Yahya, as the primary suspect in the killing. The father’s motive, according to a copy of the indictment, was that he “did not accept the victim to be in a gay relationship.”

Mama Hope feels it is time to re-humanize Africa and look to the positive change that is happening. Through a series of videos Mama Hope wants to show the light of the people we serve in Africa. We aspire to introduce our partner communities to you with the integrity and brilliance that we witness everyday. In these videos we feature the shared traits that make us all human—the dancing, the singing, the laughter and bring the compelling truth of their lives to your living room. This is a campaign to build awareness of the simple fact that we are more similar than different. It’s time for us to change the way we see people across the world and start to see other communities for the people they are instead of the stereotypes we’ve been trained to expect. It is time to stop the pity and unlock the potential!

The Vote Against Project began soon after the North Carolina General Assembly passed a state constitutional amendment that would ban legal recognition for all unmarried couples. On May 8, 2012, voters in North Carolina will decide if they want to etch discrimination into our state’s constitution.

Raleigh photographer Curtis Brown, outraged at the harm this would cause many families in his home state, started this project with the help of a team of dedicated volunteers. He aims to create a portrait of North Carolina unity — connected by a common bond to defeat discrimination.
